Successful Abdominoperineal Resection with HIPEC for Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer

We present one of the successful cases of abdominoperineal resection with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) in a patient diagnosed with locally advanced carcinoma (CA) rectum and peritoneal disease. The procedure was performed by Dr Piyush Kumar Agrawal, Clinical Director & HOD - Surgical Oncology at Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram.

The patient, Akshay Raj Pradhan, had a neoadjuvant chemotherapy that showed an excellent positive response-evidenced by a PET-CT scan. Keeping in mind the good response, the patient was referred to Dr. Agrawal and his team for abdominoperineal resection with HIPEC, which is the most effective treatment available for peritoneal disease and locally advanced cancers.

The patient was put under general anaesthesia and underwent an abdominoperineal resection, omentectomy, peritonectomy, and mesenteric peritoneal stripping. This was followed by HIPEC, a form of heated chemotherapy treatment administered directly into the abdominal cavity to treat any remaining cancer cells post-surgery and thus reduce the possibilities of recurrence.

The patient recovered quite well and was discharged from the hospital on the sixth postoperative day without problems. This case demonstrates Marengo Asia Hospitals' proficiency in providing cutting-edge cancer therapy.
